Using Resonite, like any service, comes with privacy concerns. This page aims to provide information to allow you to better understand where Resonite belongs in your [https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Threat_model| threat model] and determine if you can use Resonite safely.

== Legislation ==

Yellow Dog Man Studios s.r.o. is based in the Czech Republic and is subject to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation| GDPR] regulation.

To remain GDPR compliant, users must be 16 years of age or older to use Resonite. This is currently handled with age attestation with no 3rd party involvement. Discovery of a user being under 16 years of age with sufficient proof, despite what the user attested, will result in a ban of said user.

You can request a copy of your data, changes to your data, and deletion of your data.

== Cloud Storage ==

Resonite's cloud storage is hosted on [https://www.cloudflare.com/| Cloudflare]. Traffic to and from Cloudflare is encrypted with [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS| HTTPS], but data is not encrypted [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_data#Data_at_rest| at rest].

Encryption at rest can be achieved by uploading encrypted files, but there is no way to decrypt them within Resonite currently.

You can store items from Resonite locally with [[ResonitePackage|Resonite Packages]] to prevent them from being stored in Resonite's cloud.

== API ==

The [[API]] is hosted on [https://azure.microsoft.com/| Microsoft Azure].

Authentication and communication with the API is encrypted with HTTPS.

Interacting with Resonite will result in anonymized usage data being collected with no way to opt out, but opting out would prevent Resonite from operating as intended.

The API has partial public access, as seen here with [https://api.resonite.com/users/U-Frooxius| Frooxius' user page]. Other endpoints from the API, such as a user's messages, requires said user's authentication.

Worlds, inventory items, and message items are stored and accessed with [[Record]]s. If a record is known, even if it is a private item, it can be spawned by anyone.

It is currently not possible to delete messages through the API, as the endpoint for messages only allows you to read all messages. You cannot query individual messages or delete individual messages. This can be partially worked around via the following:
* Deleting your account.
* Creating a new Resonite account, migrating everything except messages, then deleting the old account.
* Deleting item messages, such as shared items or voice messages, as they have an additional record tied to them which can be deleted with the API.

[[Cloud variables]] can be configured such that anyone can read them.

Web, websocket, and osc traffic can be triggered arbitrarily by anyone in a session.

Users may screen share into Resonite via the rtmp and rtsp protocol. Neither the Unity Native or the libvlc backend support the encrypted variants, rtmps and rtsps.

== Sessions ==

Session thumbnails, including for private, LAN and hidden sessions, will be shared over the API and encrypted with HTTPS.

Session thumbnails stored on the server side will be cleared after 24 hours.

Searching and joining sessions is encrypted with HTTPS.

Connecting to a host will share your IP with the host, unless you're using Steam Networking Sockets. This can be mitigated with a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network| VPN]

If you're hosting a session, anyone who connects will be able to see your IP address, unless you're using Steam Networking Sockets. This can be mitigated with a VPN

If you're connecting to a session with an LNL relay, your IP is only known to the relay and not the host.

All live session traffic, such as [[Data model]] updates, voice streams, audio streams and locally shared files, are not encrypted. The following can be used to workaround this:
* Using a VPN, but this is only a partial solution.
* Connecting only over a LAN connection, but your traffic will still be unencrypted over the local network.
* Connecting over a LAN connection with tools like [https://www.wireguard.com/| WireGuard], this allows for encryption over local networks and over the internet.

Muting your microphone or sending a voice messages will stop sending traffic from your voice data stream entirely.

Changing your microphone to whisper mode will only change the max range it can be heard, the data stream will still be sent to all users in a session.

There are protoflux nodes which can broadcast key presses, but this is limited to when you're focused into the Resonite window.

It is possible to record other user's voices with in engine tools.

Admin and builder permissions allow you to change a user's voice mode with the user inspector, but a user cannot be forced out of being muted.

Saving items in public sessions should be avoided, as malicious protoflux may be injected on said items, which may behave akin to spyware.

== Settings ==

Resonite provides some [[settings#privacy|privacy settings]], such as removing potentially sensitive photo metadata and hiding yourself from screenshots taken in engine.

== Local Data ==

Facets have full access to your [[Userspace]]. You should only install facets you trust.

Resonite supports some platform interfaces, such as sharing session and online status to Discord and Steam, which can be disabled through [[Command line arguments|command line arguments]].

[[Log files|Logs]] are verbose and contain information such as your hardware and the people you have added as contacts, be mindful of who you share your logs to.

Your local [[Data and cache directories|cache]] is not encrypted.

Session thumbnails are stored locally until manually deleted.
