Wiki editing things
- Don't forget alt text on images, adding it can be as easy as doing
[file:MyFile.png|My alt text]
for regular images and[file:MyFile.png|thumb|My subtitle|alt=My alt text]
for thumbs - An apple is a fruit (see below)
- Learn wikitext, the visual editor can be frustrating to use at times and in some cases using wikitext can be easier. Wikipedia has a great cheatsheet for it
- Before committing to a page, don't forget to check your changes using the "Show preview" button on the bottom of the page
- Keep in mind the pillars:
- This is a wiki, not an advertising platform, a battleground or a social network
- The content is free (under CC BY-SA 4.0 unless specified otherwise) so, use, edit and distribute as you wish
- Respect your fellow contributors, remember that behind each screen, there is a creature
- Know your audience, remember to write in simpler terms if the page is meant to reach a greater amount of people, Keep It Simple, Stupid
- Ask for help, there are no stupid questions, when in doubt, it's better to ask
- When committing, you have the choice of marking it as a minor edit, but what does this means?
- A minor edit is usually reserved for typos or really superficial changes (but doesn't means the changes are unimportant)
- When in doubt, do not mark your edit as minor
- Don't be like me and spend time removing unit markers like
<!--T:1-->
- When linking to images, use explicit names like
[[File:InspectorMainPanel.png]]
instead of generic names; the file that you upload from the link will be renamed automatically
An apple is a fruit
"An apple is a fruit" is a reference to the french Wikipedia page for apples.
The page itself started with only the sentence "An apple is a fruit" back in 2002. Over the years the article grew into the mine of information it is now.
It serves as a reminder that articles that have simple starts can grow a lot over time. So don't hesitate to create articles, even if the initial information is small, it will most likely be updated over time.
If on the other hand you see an article about something you are knowledgeable about missing something, don't hesitate either and start contributing!
